As a family business, Laing pride themselves on delivering excellent customer service and care. The Company was voted the Training Award Winner for Best Staff Training UK at the 'UK Jeweller Awards', won as a result of their outstanding education and training programme that takes all retail staff to Diploma standard.
Laing the Jeweller has been trading as a family firm for over 150 years. The founder of the Company was James Laing, the Great-Great-Great-Great-Uncle of the present owners! Having served his apprenticeship as a clockmaker, he carried out some impressive work for the Duke of Hamilton. James Laing then set up business for himself manufacturing and repairing watches and clocks from a few rooms in Brunswick Street, Glasgow.
Laings moved into retailing with the opening of a shop in St Vincent Street, Glasgow in 1939, just as war broke out between Britain and Germany. After the war, Robert Laing Junior returned to the business and took over as Managing Director in the early 1950's.
Under Robert Laing's control, the Company - which was very short of money after the slump of 1930 and the Wars - changed direction and moved from St Vincent Street to Renfield Street in the 1960's, opening a very modern shop for its day. This shop, built on the Laing reputation of quality and promotion of modern and exciting jewellery design, gave the Company a unique position in the City. The image of the Company, as it exists today, was born.
The present Managing Director of the company is the son of Robert Laing, who retired in 1987. Stuart Laing joined the Company in 1971, having trained in business in another organisation. He is based in the Company's Head Office in Buchanan Street and also has an office in one of the shops. He is the Chief Executive and founder of Houlden Jewellers, one of the UK's top buying groups, operating on behalf of the top jewellers around the UK and Eire.
